Woman and baby killed after car crashes into lorry near Kota Tinggi

KOTA TINGGI: A woman and a baby were killed after being involved in an accident with a one-tonne lorry at KM65, Jalan Sungai Rengit-Kota Tinggi.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said police received a call in regard to the incident, which took place on Tuesday (Feb 10) at 7.20pm.

He said the car driven by the 24-year-old victim with five passengers on board was travelling from Sungai Rengit towards Kota Tinggi.

“The ill-fated car had entered the opposite direction before colliding with an oncoming lorry driven by a 60-year-old local man,’’ Supt Yusof said in a statement.

He said the car driver, who suffered from severe head injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A three-old-month boy, who was also a passenger in the car, died while receiving treatment at the Kota Tinggi Hospital,’’ said Supt Yusof.

He said the other four car’s passengers and the lorry driver are currently being treated at the same hospital.

Supt Yusof added that the bodies of the two victims have been referred to the Forensic Unit of the Kota Tinggi Hospital for investigation purposes.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death for reckless and dangerous driving.
