Emotional scene in court upon hearing the verdict

PUTRAJAYA: Tears flowed freely at the public gallery of the Federal Court as Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad’s conviction and sentence in a RM3.09mil graft case were restored.

His family members, including wife Puan Sri Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid, were hugging and comforting each other after the decision was passed down yesterday.

It is understood that Mohd Isa would be sent to the Sungai Buloh prison immediately as the committal order was issued.

When met by the press, Bibi Sharliza declined to comment.

“Saya tak ada apa-apa nak komen (I have nothing to say),” she said.

Earlier, a three-judge panel chaired by Federal Court judge Justice Nordin Hassan allowed the appeal by the prosecution to reinstate Mohd Isa’s conviction and sentence by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Feb 3, 2021.

The High Court had imposed a six-year imprisonment and a RM15.45mil fine on Mohd Isa after finding him guilty of nine corruption charges involving RM3.09mil linked to the acquisition of the Merdeka Palace Hotel and Suites in Kuching, Sarawak.

Other judges on the panel were Justices Lee Swee Seng and Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali.

On Feb 3, 2021, the High Court found Mohd Isa guilty and sentenced him but on March 6, 2024, a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal unanimously set aside his conviction and sentence.

The prosecution then filed an appeal to set aside the Court of Appeal’s decision.
