Driver held over crash that killed grandma, mum and toddler

IPOH: Police have arrested a rubber factory worker who is believed to have caused the death of three family members, including a three-year-old girl, in a road accident in Batu Gajah.

Batu Gajah OCPD Asst Comm Md Noor Aehawan Mohammad said the 27-year-old suspect would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving and causing death.

ACP Md Noor Aehawan said the suspect, in a 4WD vehicle, was believed to have overtaken a car along Jalan Tanjung Tualang near Kampung Batu 1 before colliding head-on with another car from the opposite direction.

“The suspect was on his way from Kampar to Bemban during the incident on Monday.

“He had some minor injuries and also tested positive for drugs,” he said.

The victims, representing three generations of the same family, have been identified as G. Sarasbathy, 65, her daughter S.R. Sarala Devi, 34, and granddaughter S. Shaastikka, three.

Sarasbathy and Sarala Devi were pronounced dead by medical personnel on the spot in the 9.45pm incident while the child died at the Batu Gajah Hospital.

In a separate accident, a 34-year-old woman was killed when the car she was in lost control and crashed at KM32 of Jalan Kuala Kangsar-Gerik-Pengkalan Hulu in Lenggong yesterday.

Gerik OCPD Supt Abdul Samad Othman said the woman, who was in the back passenger seat, died on the spot while four others, including the driver, were injured.

He said those injured, aged between six and 33, have been sent to the Gerik Hospital for treatment.

“Initial investigations found that the woman driver, aged 33, lost control of the car before it veered into the opposite lane and crashed into a divider.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act,” he said.
