PUTRAJAYA: While the government is not against pig farming or pork consumption, the rearing of such livestock should not be at areas that can cause public concern, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).
He said communities should not be forced to live near pig farms which could lead to hygiene and pollution issues.
“I agree with the view that it should not be continued in areas that cause anxiety among residents.
“If you want, look for a more distant location,” he said at the National Unity Ministry’s monthly assembly.
Anwar said although there are modern technologies that could reduce the environmental impact of such farms, it does not mean that pigs can be reared near residential areas.
“I do not agree if there was a pig farm near my house.
“If there are such projects, find locations that won’t cause a controversy, because the problems are real. The odour, health and waste issues are real problems, not made up.
“So, find a place that has consensus. If there isn’t any in Kuala Lumpur, then there isn’t. If it’s difficult in Selangor, then it’s difficult. Don’t go looking for problems,” he added.
On Jan 26, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the Selangor government decided to halt the proposed pig farming project in Bukit Tagar following public objection.
Amirudin had said the proposed location for modern pig farming facilities will be re-evaluated to ensure they are far from residential areas.
