Modi receives grand Malaysian welcome


SERI KEMBANGAN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand welcome in Malaysia as he began his two-day official visit on Saturday (Feb 7).

His first stop after arriving in Kuala Lumpur was a grand reception where he met with the Indian diaspora here.

The reception was held at the Mines International Exhibition & Convention Centre (MIECC) here on Saturday (Feb 7).

He was accompanied by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the event and both leaders arrived at 6pm.

Modi's last official visit to Malaysia was in November 2015 but he made a brief stopover here on May 31, 2018.

In his departure statement posted on X, Modi said the visit will boost the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations and enhance cooperation across sectors.

"At the invitation of my friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, I will be visiting Malaysia, a nation with which India's ties are deep-rooted and extensive," he said.

Malaysia is home to a vibrant Indian diaspora. Looking forward to today's community programme in Kuala Lumpur, where I will get an opportunity to interact with our diaspora," he added.

Both prime ministers will be attending a reception event on Saturday(Feb 7).

Modi will be accompanied by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and senior government officials.

According to Wisma Putra, both leaders are expected to take stock of Malaysia-India bilateral relations and explore further collaboration, particularly in trade and investment; defence and security; labour; tourism; connectivity; agriculture; and education.

The discussion will also include regional and international issues of mutual interest.

They will also witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in several fields.
