PETALING JAYA: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed from New Delhi for his two day official visit to Malaysia.
The premier who will be visiting Malaysia on Feb 7 and Feb 8 is expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur at around 5pm on Saturday(Feb 7). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is slated to welcome him.
Modi's last official visit to Malaysia was in November 2015 but he made a brief stopover here on May 31,2018.
In his departure statement posted on X, Modi said the visit will boost Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations and enhance cooperation across sectors.
“At the invitation of my friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, I will be visiting Malaysia, a nation with which India’s ties are deep-rooted and extensive,” he said.
Malaysia is home to a vibrant Indian diaspora. Looking forward to today’s community programme in Kuala Lumpur, where I will get an opportunity to interact with our diaspora,” he added.
Both prime ministers will be attending a reception event on Saturday(Feb 7).
Modi will be accompanied by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and senior government officials.
According to Wisma Putra, both leaders are expected to take stock of Malaysia-India bilateral relations and explore further collaboration, particularly in trade and investment; defence and security; labour; tourism; connectivity; agriculture; and education.
The discussion will also include regional and international issues of mutual interest.
They will also witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in several fields.
In 2025, total trade between Malaysia and India reached RM79.49 bil (USD18.59 bil). Malaysia’s total exports to India amounted to RM52.30 bil (USD12.24 bil) and total imports amounted RM27.19 bil (USD6.35 bil).
