A MAN in India killed his own daughter so that he could stand as a candidate in a panchayat (village council) election, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Pandurang Kondmangale, 28, a barber from Kerur village in Nanded city of Maharashtra state, had three children, but only those with two or fewer children are allowed to contest the election.

In order to qualify, he sought advice from village head Ganesh Shinde, who allegedly suggested that he get rid of one child.

Rather than adoption or abandonment, Pandurang decided to kill one of his six-year-old twin girls.

He took one of them to Nizamabad in Telangana state, about 100km away, and pushed her into a canal, causing her to drown.

Workers in a nearby field heard a splash and rushed to the scene, only to find the girl’s lifeless body.

After her identity was determined, police questioned Pandurang, who initially claimed that his daughter was in another city receiving treatment for an illness, but later confessed to the killing.
