GEORGE TOWN: Jelutong MP RSN Rayer urges the authorities to expedite investigations into the death of 17-year-old Jason Lee Jia Chen, who was killed in a road accident in November last year, saying the prolonged delay had caused further distress to the victim’s family.
Lee was killed in November when his motorcycle collided with a bus along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, near a flyover in front of the Mutiara Line LRT construction site.
At a press conference at the state DAP headquarters in Jalan Rangoon Friday (Feb 6), Rayer said two letters had been sent to the authorities seeking updates — one to the Penang Attorney General’s Chambers director at the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office on Jan 12 and another to the police Traffic Investigation Department on Nov 24 last year.
He said police had informed the family that investigations were still pending several reports, including a chemistry report.
“Given how long the investigation has dragged on, the family feels this is unfair.
“We urge the Attorney General’s Chambers to complete the investigation as soon as possible and charge the culprit in court so justice can take its course,” he said.
Rayer believed there was closed-circuit television footage of the incident at the scene.
“If a charge is made, the driver’s licence can be suspended and evidence can be obtained more effectively through proper legal procedures.
“We demand that the driver be charged and that his licence be suspended pending the outcome of the case, as he should not still be driving on the road,” he added.
Describing the incident as deeply regrettable, Rayer said Lee had been an excellent student preparing for his SPM examinations.
“He had gone out to buy food and was on his way home when the accident occurred and claimed his life,” he said.
Rayer also called on drivers of heavy vehicles to be more considerate towards other road users, particularly pedestrians and motorcyclists.
Also present at the press conference were Lee’s father, Lee Chin Hooi, 48, and mother, Marcia Lau Cheng Li, 53.
