No need for controversy over study on KL mayor elections, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: There’s no need to create a controversy out of a study into possible elections for the KL Mayor post, says DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

Loke said it was merely a study, opening room for discussion.

“Both pros and cons will be discussed. It is simply a feasibility study.

“There is nothing controversial about this,” the Transport Minister told reporters after a walkabout at the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan bus terminal here on Tuesday (Feb 3).

Loke added that many developed and democratic countries also hold mayoral elections.

“It is also not an issue pushed by DAP, as elected representatives from other parties, including Keadilan, have proposed this,” he said.

According to Loke, former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin also mooted the idea at a recent forum, saying it encourages accountability.

“The Kuala Lumpur City Council is a massive local authority. It’s just a study being carried out after all,” he said.

Recently, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said that a feasibility study will be carried out into possible elections for the KL Mayor post.

She said that such an election was considered more practical than electing many city council members through local elections.
