KOTA KINABALU: Three foreigners were arrested in separate cases involving threats and immigration offences in the Tawau district over the past few days.
In the first incident, a man in his 30s was arrested on Friday evening for blackmailing a former acquaintance in Kampung Merotai Besar using her personal videos and photos.
Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the suspect demanded money from a woman in her 20s and threatened to circulate her videos and photos if she failed to pay by 10.35am.
“The woman claimed that the suspect frequently called her late at night with the intention of disturbing her peace and family harmony,” he said.
The woman is believed to have paid some money to the suspect before deciding to lodge a police report for her own safety.
The suspect was arrested at about 5.45pm the same day.
In a similar case, an 18-year-old suspect was arrested for threatening his friend via WhatsApp at Kampung Haji Sundu, Batu 2, Jalan Apas.
The victim claimed the suspect had made demands and threatened to harm him if he failed to comply.
Fearing for his safety, the victim lodged a police report, leading to the suspect’s arrest shortly afterwards, ACP Jasmin said.
Both suspects will be investigated for criminal intimidation as well as offences under the Immigration Act, he said in a statement yesterday.
In a separate incident, an elderly woman in her 80s was arrested for using another person’s identification document while seeking medical treatment at a hospital in Tawau.
ACP Jasmin said hospital staff became suspicious of the MyKad presented and escorted the woman to the National Registration Department for verification, where it was confirmed that the identity card belonged to someone else.
The woman was taken to the police station for investigation under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 for using or possessing an identity card issued to another person, as well as the Immigration Act.
The MyKad was confiscated for investigation.
