Toy shop fire causes RM1mil in losses

KUALA TERENGGANU: A toy, bicycle and electric scooter shop in Kampung Simpang Tok Ku near here suffered losses of nearly RM1mil after it was destroyed in a fire.

The shop’s manager, Maya Suhaidi, said the incident, which occurred at about 7.40pm on Thursday, destroyed all items in the five-year-old shop, including about RM10,000 in cash from daily sales.

Maya, 40, said she and 10 employees were inside the two-storey building when they detected the smell of smoke coming from the rear of the shop.

“I immediately checked the source of the smoke and discovered a fire near the women’s prayer room.

“After making an emergency call, I instructed the employees to leave the premises as the smoke became thicker,” she told Bernama.

She said the shop’s owner, Mohd Azrol Azahar, 39, was not present at the time of the incident as he was managing another branch of the shop in Kuala Berang.

Meanwhile, Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue Station chief Thoyyibah Taib said 24 personnel along with three fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

“Firefighting operations took nearly half an hour.

“About 50% of the lower floor was damaged. However, no casualties were reported,” she said.
