Selangor condemns supporters’ actions at Kuala Terengganu drawbridge

PETALING JAYA: Selangor has strongly condemned the actions of a small group of its supporters following an incident at the Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge before the Super League match against Terengganu on Sunday (Feb 1).

In a statement, the club said it deeply regretted the incident involving a small number of supporters and stressed that it does not compromise on matters of public order and safety.

"Selangor strongly condemns any form of behaviour that violates the law and threatens public safety. Such conduct is contrary to the values of the club and the wider Selangor football community," the statement said on Tuesday (Feb 2).

The club also expressed its appreciation to the Terengganu police for their swift and firm action in handling the situation, adding that Selangor remains open to engaging with supporter groups and will fully cooperate with the authorities to promote a safer and more positive football culture.

The incident saw police detain hundreds of Selangor supporters following reports of an uncontrolled procession, traffic obstruction and the lighting of flares at the drawbridge on Sunday night.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said 412 individuals travelling in 10 buses were brought to the Terengganu police headquarters for investigations. Of these, 33 Selangor FC supporters were remanded on various charges, including drug-related offences and obstructing public servants in the course of their duties. Twenty-one individuals tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while police also seized drugs believed to be for personal use and arrested several individuals under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Nine others were arrested for possessing flares, and investigations were conducted under the Explosives Act 1957. Those remanded are aged between 17 and 43.

Selangor said the incident should serve as a reminder of the shared responsibility among all stakeholders to uphold mutual respect and unity, while police reiterated that firm action would be taken against anyone who threatens public security.
