Sufficient pork supply for upcoming CNY season

THERE will be no shortage of pork for the upcoming Chinese New Year season, says Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Chan Foong Hin.

He said 60% of the pork supplied in Peninsular Malaysia currently comes from farms in Perak, and that pork supply from Selangor had been near non-existent since last year.

This comes after Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah decreed on Jan 12 that there should be no more pig farming operations in Tanjong Sepat.

The proposed relocation of the affected pig farms to Bukit Tagar has also been halted, according to Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari on Monday.

“For the farms in Tanjung Sepat, they had an outbreak of African swine fever last year, so it means their production has already dropped significantly.

“This drop in pork production will be supplemented by the imported frozen pork and also those supplied from Perak or other states, so I can give the assurance that we have sufficient supply,” he said in a press conference at Parliament here yesterday.

Chan also said pork prices will not see any price hikes caused by farmers after he met with major pig farmers in Perak.

“I met with all of them last week and they have all committed to no price hikes for the Chinese New Year season.

“So if there is any price hike for pork, it will not be caused by the farmers, but could be due to the many different partners along the supply chain,” he added.
