Motorcyclists make up two-thirds of road deaths in 2025, says Loke


KUALA LUMPUR: Motorcycle users continue to account for the majority of road-accident deaths, with 66.4% of all such deaths in 2025 being motorcycle users, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said that of the 6,537 road fatalities recorded in 2025, 4,340 of them were motorcycle users, despite motorcycles only being involved in 13.7% of all road accidents.

Of these, Loke said those motorcycle users aged 16 to 30 are at the highest risk of being involved in fatal accidents.

To improve the safety of this group, he said the ministry was planning to refocus its existing road-safety programmes on these young riders.

This includes its MyLesen Class B2 Driving Licence Assistance programme, which he said would be targeted at secondary schools to ensure that students who ride motorcycles receive formal and structured training, reducing the risk of accidents caused by a lack of riding experience and training.

The Ministry’s popular free helmet replacement programme would also be restructured to target school students who ride motorcycles, Loke said.

“We will also step up enforcement, especially against unlicensed motorcycle users, as they pose a serious threat on the road due to not having any training.

“Despite this, the key to resolving this issue is changing the attitudes of our road users so that they are more aware of the importance of road safety, as most accidents are caused by human negligence,” he told the Dewan Rakyat during Ministry Question Time on Tuesday (Jan 27).

Loke was responding to a question from Datuk Siti Aminah Aching (BN-Beaufort) on the main factors behind the increase in road accidents in Malaysia involving motorcycle riders, and on the measures being taken to address this issue.
