MCMC summons local daily's reps to give statement over error in translating King's speech


PETALING JAYA:Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has summoned representatives of Chinese language daily China Press following an alleged mistranslation of its online content.

In a statement on Tuesday (Jan 20), MCMC said the representatives had been summoned to its headquarters to have their statement recorded on Tuesday afternoon.

“MCMC has received an official complaint from the public regarding online content published by China Press, which allegedly contained false elements involving the Address of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, during the opening ceremony of the Parliament session on Monday (Jan 19),” it said.

MCMC said an investigation paper had been opened and an investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The commission said the investigation is based on the improper use of network facilities or communication services that have the potential to cause public confusion and affect community harmony.
