Umno charts new course ahead of GE16

PETALING JAYA: The just-concluded Umno general assembly signals a major recalibration as the party looks towards the 16th General Election, focusing on rebranding and renewed calls for Malay-Muslim unity.

Political observers and party members see it as having eased internal tensions and provided clarity on the party’s direction to the grassroots.

In a hall packed with 6,412 delegates, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was frank in his explanation on why it is important for the party to be in the unity government, and the question of Malay unity.

He said Umno would continue to support the unity government to ensure political stability and the country’s well-being, despite calls from the youth movement to exit the government and offers of political cooperation from other parties.

In what is seen as the most significant take-away from this meeting, the Umno president proposed the creation of a “grand collaboration” to unite all Malay and Muslim political parties.

Umno Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin said the meeting served as a platform for both consolidation and recalibration of Umno’s future direction.

“Firstly, in terms of its political alliances. And secondly, how the party manages internal differences while opening up broader space to address the concerns and anxieties of the grassroots,” he said.

He added that the assembly was also a litmus test to gauge both public and internal reactions to the increasingly intense dynamics of current political developments.

“At the same time, it sends a clear and strong message to its partners that Umno cannot be taken lightly,” he said.

In terms of Malay unity and the call for the grand collaboration, Hafiz said that Umno has also adopted a pragmatic approach by opening its doors, not only to former allies, but even to former opponents, to return, consolidate and to collectively champion the broader agenda of Malay unity.

“This is a significant step, and certainly not an easy decision for any political party to undertake, especially given Umno’s history and stature,” he said.

Political analyst Prof Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said Umno’s proposal reflects a desire to consolidate the Malay-Muslim political base amid existing fragmentation.

“However, its success depends on trust within all those involved, leadership maturity and a clear reform agenda.

“Without addressing past rivalries, governance credibility and inclusivity within the country’s multiracial framework, a grand collaboration risks being seen as tactical rather than genuinely unifying.”

Now that Umno has started the ball rolling, the others should join the force under the unity banner, he added.

Political analyst Prof Datuk Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said a grand collaboration would require all parties to set aside past grievances, embrace the principle of “buang yang keruh, ambil yang jernih” (let bygones be bygones) and engage in sincere dialogue grounded in mutual respect.

“If implemented with clear governance, transparency and fair representation, this collaboration has the potential to work.

“It can create a more coherent Malay political voice, reduce harmful polarisation, and contribute to a more stable and predictable national political landscape, benefiting not only the Malays, but all Malaysians,” he said.

Ultimately, the success of this initiative will depend on the willingness of all Malay parties to rise above short-term political calculations and commit to a broader, principled vision of unity, he added.

Political analyst Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said Umno should consider other factors when proposing the grand collaboration.

“Perhaps they should also factor in the strength of the unity government and how other parties would look at it as well,” he said.
