Two killed as car crashes and bursts into flames at Jitra toll plaza


JITRA: Two people have died after the car they were in crashed and caught fire at the Jitra toll plaza on the North-South Expressway here.

Jitra Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Assistant Fire Chief Noor Azhar Tajudin, said they received an emergency call at 1.05am on Monday (Jan 19), according to Astro Awani.

He said a team of seven firefighters from the Jitra fire station was dispatched, assisted by five members from the Seberang Nyonya Volunteer Fire Brigade.

"The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department operations centre received a call regarding a car fire at the scene.

"The operations commander reported that upon arrival, the vehicle was ablaze.

"The estimated damage is 85%, and an inspection found two victims inside the vehicle," he said.

"However, the identities of the two victims have yet to be determined," he added.

Noor Azhar said the fire was brought under control at 1.23am. Firefighters then cut open the vehicle to remove the victims.

He said the operation was also assisted by the police and the Health Ministry.
