KLANG: A group of residents from Kampung Papan turned up unannounced at the Selangor DAP convention to demand that promises made in the previous general election be fulfilled.
Leading the group was Kampung Jalan Papan Residents Association vice-secretary Lau Siew Lam, who brought about 20 residents with her to the Selangor DAP Convention at Centro Mall in Klang.
She said residents of Kampung Jalan Papan were disappointed because promises of replacement housing and fair compensation had not been fulfilled.
“Hopefully, before the next election begins, we will be able to solve this issue.
“We want what they (DAP) promised us last time,” Lau told reporters outside the convention.
According to Lau, there are still 40 houses in Kampung Jalan Papan that have not been demolished yet due to ongoing court cases.
“So we hope this issue can be addressed, as it involves our residents.
“Previously, DAP wasn’t the government, so they could not solve it. But now they are the government, and it is still the same.
“We just hope this can be addressed soon,” said Lau.
Lau said her group managed to meet DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo before the Selangor DAP convention began at 10am.
Lau also handed over a memorandum to a DAP officer at the event.
Among the demands made in the memorandum was a halt to the new development project in Kampung Jalan Papan, and a demand that the developer compensate for the demolition of 29 houses last year.
“He told us that he will help us settle this,” said Lau briefly before leaving.
In November last year, several individuals were arrested amid tense scenes as homes were demolished in Kampung Jalan Papan.
It was reported that 20 houses in Kampung Jalan Papan, Pandamaran, were demolished in November to make way for a developer's new project.
In October last year, it was reported that around 500 residents protested outside Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, urging Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to intervene.
