KUCHING: Comprehensive development plans focusing on growth in the southern region of Sarawak, particularly Samarahan as a modern low-carbon city, are being formulated in line with public health needs and environmental sustainability, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Sarawak Premier said planning can be carried out more accurately and with clearer direction when development trends are identified and supported by statistical data and economic analysis.

“We are planning for future generations; this comprehensive planning will benefit Samarahan, Kuching and Serian.

“We are also planning large-scale green areas with the planting of various species of tropical trees, which will not only serve as tourist attractions but also function as research centres,” he said.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Samarahan Boulevard, Abang Johari said some 405ha of land in Samarahan have been identified to be designated as green areas that will be planted with Sarawak native hardwoods such as belian.

To further protect the area, he said it cannot be used for any commercial or residential development, adding that proposed development must be tabled in the State Legislative Assembly, Bernama reported.

“It can be developed into a recreational and jogging spot for residents, similar to the State Library and Reservoir Park,” Abang Johari added.
