Malaysiakini editor meets Umno leaders on AGM sidelines, apologises for social media blunder

PETALING JAYA: Malaysiakini executive editor RK Anand has met with Umno’s leaders to apologise over recent errors in one of the portal’s Malay social media posts, in a meeting held on the sidelines of Umno’s general assembly.

Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said Anand personally apologised to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Thursday (Jan 15).

Also present at the meeting was Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asryaf Wajdi Dusuki.

“In the meeting, Anand apologised and explained what happened to the president (Ahmad Zahid).

“The president firmly expressed the party’s deep disappointment over what had occurred, with Anand apologising and assuring us that it would not happen again," he said in a video shared on Facebook on Friday (Jan 16).

In the same video, Akmal also warned Malaysiakini against repeating the same mistake, stressing that there would be no leniency next time.

"Had it been left to me alone, perhaps nothing could have been done, but thankfully, the issue was brought to the president, who decided to forgive Malaysiakini.

"I would also like to thank Malaysiakini for coming to our general assembly to apologise, but do not think that because we were lenient this time, you can step on us again," he added.

On Wednesday (Jan 14), Malaysiakini issued an apology over blunders in its social media posts, which showcased inaccurate graphics about Umno.

The portal said the error was quickly detected and deleted after corrections were made.
