Blaze kills three, destroys two factories in Banting industrial area

PETALING JAYA: Four factories in an industrial area along Jalan 5, Kampung Olak Lempit, Banting, were affected by a fire on Wednesday night (Jan 14), with two destroyed.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the department received a report on the incident at 10.03pm, after which a team was immediately dispatched to the scene.

He said the fire involved an oil-processing factory and that defensive firefighting operations were carried out due to explosions on the premises.

“Firebreak operations were successfully conducted to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent factories, and at about 1.15am the fire was also reported to have involved two additional factories, but it was successfully contained from spreading further,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 15).

According to Ahmad Mukhlis, the fire destroyed two factories. A laboratory sustained 5% damage, while another unidentified factory sustained 1% damage.

He added that three victims were found charred inside one of the destroyed factories, and their identities have yet to be identified.

He said the operation involved personnel from the Banting Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from stations in KLIA, Dengkil, Cyberjaya, Bangi, Petaling Jaya, Precinct 7 (Putrajaya) and Nilai, Negri Sembilan.

He added that volunteer fire brigades from Sri Serdang and Rantau Panjang were also deployed, along with personnel from the police and the Health Ministry.
