REPEATED wild elephant intrusions have left residents of the Kesedar Chalil Land Development Plan settlement in Gua Musang, Kelantan, worried for their safety, reported Kosmo!.

Residents have become increasingly distressed after the last intrusion on Sunday, that left crops and house porches heavily damaged by the herd of about 20 elephants.

“My son and I were extremely scared and huddled together indoors,” said Hazura Ismail, 40, of the incident. “I only dared to step outside after I heard the motorbike engines of my fellow villagers, who told me the elephants had left, but not before damaging our porch.”

Another resident, Zaid Yaacob, 61, said the elephants have become increasingly bold, not only destroying crops but also posing a serious threat to villagers’ safety.

“They destroyed banana plants, coconut and rubber trees, and in the recent incident, the elephants were right behind our houses, damaging fences and homes.”

Mukim Chalil federal village security management committee chairman Hasan Saleh said residents have repeatedly lodged complaints on the elephant attacks with the Wildlife and National Parks Department but have yet to see effective action.

“We hope the authorities will take immediate steps such as closer monitoring, control measures or relocation to ensure the safety of residents,” he said.
