Sabah by-elections will see over 900 cops on duty

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police will mobilise more than 900 personnel to handle the coming by-elections.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said although the Lamag and Kinabatangan seats were not considered hot or difficult seats, police would still be on high alert to ensure a smooth process.

He said for the nominations for the two seats tomorrow, a total of 646 personnel would be stationed at the various centres and other locations for safety, while 837 personnel would be on ground duty throughout the campaign up to polling day.

These personnel and officers are mainly from the Sandakan, Beluran, Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kinabatangan police stations, he added

Comm Jauteh reminded political parties, candidates and their supporters to be mindful of the sensitivities and avoid provocations.

He also urged those involved in the by-elections to carry out their campaigns professionally.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) reminded election candidates to hand in their nomination papers to the returning officers between 9am and 10am on Saturday.

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus advised candidates to fill up their nomination forms and recheck them early at the EC office or Returning Officer’s office before Nomination Day and pay their deposits earlier.

Receipt of payment must be brought along during Nomination Day as proof of payment, while candidates must obtain and present the letter of authority to use their party symbol when handing over their nomination papers.

Candidates who have paid their deposits for election campaign materials will be subject to the Election Offences Act 1954 and local authority by-laws.
