MARTIAL arts superstar Jackie Chan regrets being a strict father which led to an estranged relationship with his son Jaycee, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Speaking during a press tour to promote his latest film Whispers of Gratitude, Jackie was asked if the movie reminded him of his relationship with his own family members.
The 71-year-old admitted that he had been overly harsh as a parent.
“In the past, whenever I saw my son Jaycee, I scolded him. When I went on television, I criticised him. I never had a single good word to say,” he said.
Jackie said over time, his son grew increasingly fearful of him as a father and would only call him once a year to say happy birthday.
However, even the birthday phone calls stopped after Jackie chided his son and ordered him to stop calling.
He said he now realised that he had been overly strict as a parent and that he no longer imposed expectations on his children.
Jaycee, who followed in his father’s footsteps into the entertainment industry, suffered a career setback when he was arrested in Beijing in 2014 for marijuana use.
Today, Jaycee, 42, keeps a low profile and hardly makes public appearances.
