PAS central committee to meet over crisis with Bersatu

PETALING JAYA: The PAS central committee will meet soon to decide its position within Perikatan Nasional, says an aide to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

“The PAS central committee will have a meeting soon. A statement will be issued accordingly,” said Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman, who is Abdul Hadi’s political secretary, when contacted by The Star on Monday (Dec 29).

Mohd Syahir, who is also Bachok MP, said PAS always respects the democratic process and the discretionary powers of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.

Mohd Syahir had earlier issued a cryptic remark in a Facebook post.

“New year, new resolutions. We turn over a #NewLeaf #TurningPoint,” he wrote.

On Sunday (Dec 28), Bersatu’s Abu Bakar was appointed as the 12th Perlis Mentri Besar, replacing PAS's Mohd Shukri, who stepped down on Thursday (Dec 25) due to health reasons.

Ties between PAS and Bersatu, who are key partners in Perikatan Nasional, have since been strained.

Several PAS leaders made cryptic remarks about loyalty on social media following Abu Bakar’s appointment, and the PAS Tasek Gelugor youth wing on Monday urged its central leadership to sever ties with Bersatu at all levels.

At least eight of Perlis' 15 elected assemblymen – three from PAS and five from Bersatu – had submitted statutory declarations (SDs) withdrawing their support for Mohd Shukri’s leadership prior to his resignation.

PAS subsequently sacked its three assemblymen who were said to have signed the SDs.
