Melaka police detain 15 foreigners over human trafficking


MELAKA: Fifteen Myanmar nationals, comprising 10 men and five women, were detained on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking and migrant smuggling during an Op Pintas raid at a hotel lobby in Ayer Keroh here on Thursday (Dec 18).

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the raid, conducted at about 5pm, followed intelligence gathered by the D7 Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Melaka Police Contingent Headquarters in collaboration with the D7 CID of the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters.

"One of those detained is believed to be an agent involved in human trafficking and migrant smuggling, and police seized a motorcycle and a mobile phone from the suspect.

"All the suspects, aged 21 to 39, have been remanded until Jan 15 next year to assist with investigations under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said in a statement here on Friday (Dec 19).

He thanked the public for providing information to the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters and urged those with information on criminal activities to call 06-2842222. — Bernama
