Instances of part-time job scams more than doubled in 2025, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: Incidences of part-time job scams have sharply increased by 146% in 2025, resulting in RM202.58mil in losses.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said a total of 8,484 cases were recorded between Jan 1 and Dec 14 compared with 3,451 cases during the same period in 2024.

"This represents an increase of 5,033 cases, or 146%," he said in a statement on Friday (Dec 19).

He said losses amounting to RM202.58mil were recorded this year, a significant jump from RM118.83mil recorded in 2024, adding this was a major concern.

Comm Rusdi said the spike in cases shows that job scams are becoming more rampant.

"Investigations found that syndicates typically use social media and instant messaging apps, offering part-time jobs that promise high payouts.

"Victims are asked to make upfront payments and transfer money into mule accounts," he said.

He said that no legitimate employer would ever ask for upfront payment before employing anyone.

He advised the public to remain vigilant against such scams and to refrain from sharing personal or banking information with unknown parties.

He also said victims should immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) 997 hotline as well as to make a report at the nearest police station.

"Swift action is crucial to enable authorities to trace and freeze the flow of funds involved," he said.
