Further downpour expected till Thursday

PETALING JAYA: Warnings of continuous heavy rain, expected to last until Thursday, have been issued across several states.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said severe continuous rainfall has been forecasted across Kelantan and Terengganu.

“Warnings have also been issued for parts of Pahang, including Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin, as well as Mersing and Kota Tinggi in Johor,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Continuous rain alerts have been issued for Perak (Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar), Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran and Bera) and Johor (Segamat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai and Johor Baru), he said.

Mohd Hisham added that continuous rain is expected to last until Tuesday in several areas in Sarawak, including Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah.

The warnings follow a series of weather-related incidents over the past month, including landslides, flash floods and infrastructure damage caused by intense and prolonged rainfall.

Among them was last Friday, when heavy rain in Johor Baru uprooted trees, caused flash floods and brought traffic to a standstill.

A stage set up for a major event at Dataran Bandaraya also collapsed.

The public is advised to monitor the latest weather updates on the MetMalaysia website, via its official social media pages or the myCuaca app, or by contacting the hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
