Commuter train rides between JB and Kulai to begin early next year, says Loke

JOHOR BARU: The public will soon be able to enjoy a 20-minute train ride between Johor Baru and Kulai, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the train service is expected to begin operations as early as the first quarter of next year, initially using existing coaches.

"The Transport Ministry is also planning to introduce commuter services between Kulai and Johor Baru. This is currently being designed, and we are trying to procure new train sets for the commuter line.

"However, while we wait for them, we will optimise the existing coaches that were previously used to serve passengers travelling between Gemas and Johor Baru," he said.

Loke made these remarks at a press conference after the launch of the Electric Train Service (ETS) between Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur.

The new service is expected to offer 16 trips from Johor Baru to Kulai and another 16 trips in the opposite direction each day.

"Previously, people had to drop off at Gemas to switch trains as the ETS only travelled that far. Now that we have the ETS, that is no longer necessary, allowing us to redeploy the existing coaches for the Kulai–Johor Baru commuter service for the time being.

"Since the distance is shorter, we are able to increase frequency and ensure trains run almost every half an hour," he added.
