JOHOR BARU: The Federal Government has exceeded its affordable housing target of providing 500,000 units under the 12th Malaysia Plan, says Nga Kor Ming (pic).
The Housing and Local Government Minister said it will deliver 511,544 affordable homes, which include projects that are completed, under construction or have received planning approval.
He said the achievement reflects the strong commitment and cooperation of the federal and state governments as well as private developers.
“December marks the final month of the 12th Malaysia Plan. Previously, every government under a Malaysia Plan would set targets for affordable housing construction.
“This is indeed a significant achievement. No previous government has managed to meet the set target.
“However, the Madani Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has made history by not only achieving but exceeding the target of building 500,000 affordable housing units,” he added.
Nga said this at a press conference after the Sentuhan Kejayaan 2025 ceremony and the handover of keys for the Vista Tiara housing project at Danga Bay here yesterday.
He said 2025 marks an important milestone for the nation’s housing sector following the launch of the Madani Housing Reform on Nov 20.
Nga said the reform is anchored on five key initiatives aimed at strengthening housing governance and protection for homebuyers, namely strengthening legislation through amendments to the Real Property Development Act; implementing digital sale and purchase agreements via eSPA; digitising the housing ecosystem through the Housing Integrated Management System; introducing a centralised housing information platform under Teduh; and conducting audits of Housing Development Accounts.
“With these five housing reform mechanisms under the ministry, God willing, there will be no more abandoned housing projects in Malaysia by 2030.”
Nga said his ministry has approved RM82mil for the construction of Johor’s first People’s Housing Programme (PPR), which will be developed in Larkin here.
He added that the integrated development will serve as transit housing for young people in Johor Baru and will be managed by the Johor Housing Development Corporation.
Nga said the project is currently in the tender stage, with construction expected to begin in the first quarter of next year.
He added that the PPR Larkin development will comprise 300 residential units and will be built on a 3.63ha site.
“The rental rates will be very affordable. For example, in the Larkin area, a three-bedroom unit typically costs around RM2,000 per month but under this scheme, the government will charge only RM600.
“For a single room, the rental will be as low as RM200. This will function as transit housing for Johor’s youth where after two or three years, as families grow and livelihoods improve, they can move on to other homes.”
Nga also revealed that Malaysia’s home ownership rate currently stands at 76.5%, reflecting increasing social and economic stability.
