Ministers made senators again

New term begins: Saifuddin Nasution taking oath for a second term as Zambry looks on.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three ministers will serve their second term as senators after they were sworn in at the Dewan Negara.

They are Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

They took their oath before Senate President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah.

Awang Bemee said their senatorial term which began yesterday will end on Dec 2, 2028.

Saifuddin Nasution was the first to be sworn in, followed by Zambry and Mohd Na’im.

The swearing-in ceremony which began at 10.05am was the first order of business in the Dewan Negara yesterday.

The three ministers were appointed as senators on Dec 3, 2022, as part of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Cabinet after the 15th General Election.

The appointments also signalled that the three will continue to serve in their existing roles.

This also confirms The Star’s report earlier that only the three ministers will be sworn in as senators. Anwar had earlier said that there may not be a reshuffle but instead vacancies will be filled.
