IPOH: The Perak government is intensifying efforts to attract elderly tourists looking for warmer destinations during the cold winter months, says Loh Sze Yee.
The Perak tourism, industry, investment and corridor development committee chairman noted that more travellers from affluent countries are choosing to “escape” harsh winters by visiting tropical or temperate regions in December and beyond.
Loh explained that many elderly travellers opt for holidays in warmer climates as they can no longer cope with colder weather.
"In recognising the economic potential of this segment, Perak is positioning itself as an appealing destination for senior travellers.
"Several tourism products in the state have been upgraded to provide elderly-friendly facilities under the Age Friendly City programme.
"These enhancements include improved accessibility, safety features, and amenities catering specifically to the needs of older visitors," he said at the state assembly sitting on Wednesday (Nov 27).
He was responding to Wong May Ing (PH–Pantai Remis), who enquired about the state’s plans for developing senior-friendly tourism in Perak.
Loh said the Age Friendly City programme has been allocated RM2mil under the state budget, reflecting the government’s commitment to creating a tourism environment that is both inclusive and economically beneficial.
"Elderly tourists are becoming an important economic segment. By improving infrastructure and services tailored to them, Perak aims to boost tourism while ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for senior visitors.
"With its natural attractions, cultural sites, and improved elderly-friendly facilities, Perak hopes to become a preferred winter getaway for tourists from across the globe," Loh added.
This year, a total of 16 projects under the Age Friendly City initiative were implemented across various districts, including Kellie’s Castle in Kinta, Laman Budaya in Kuala Kangsar, Zoo Taiping & Night Safari in Larut, Matang and Selama, and Taman Tasik Temoh in Batang Padang, among others.
