Cops nab 16-year-old over assault of student at Sungai Petani school dormitory

SUNGAI PETANI: A 16-year-old student has been remanded for three days to assist in the investigation of an assault case involving a Form Four student who was allegedly beaten unconscious at a school dormitory here early Monday (Nov 24) morning.

The victim was found unconscious in a school toilet by his teacher before being sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment.

The boy’s mother was informed of the incident by the school at 9.05am, with bruising observed on her son’s body.

It is learnt the victim was assaulted at around 12.10am, purportedly after allegedly badmouthing a friend of one of the suspects.

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Hanyan Ramlan said preliminary investigations indicated that a student, angered by the victim’s alleged humiliation of his friend, invited three other students to confront the victim.

Initially, four students aged between 16 and 17 were detained to assist in the investigation. However, only one, the Form Four student, was remanded for three days, while the other three were released by the Sungai Petani Court on Thursday (Nov 27).

ACP Hanyan said this was the first such case at the dormitory, and there were no closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings at the scene.

The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code.
