KUALA LUMPUR: Penang has fully recovered from the recent floods as of Wednesday (Nov 26) evening, while seven other states remain affected.
Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis, Perak and Terengganu continue to record an increase in the number of evacuees, according to figures from the various state authorities.
In PENANG, the last temporary relief centre at SK Permatang Pasir in Central Seberang Prai closed at 11am after all eight evacuees were allowed to return to their homes.
In KELANTAN, the number of evacuees rose to 10,578 people from 4,016 families, compared with 9,615 this morning.
They are currently housed at 63 relief centres across nine affected districts – Kota Baru, Tumpat, Bachok, Pasir Puteh, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang.
The Irrigation and Drainage Department's InfoBanjir portal reported that water levels in several major rivers in Kelantan continued to rise, with several stations recording readings above warning and danger levels as of 3pm.
The water level in Sungai Golok, Rantau Panjang rose to 9.31m, exceeding the danger level of 9m, while the water level in Kampung Jenob was at 23.67m, exceeding the danger level of 23.50m.
Also recording an increase was Sungai Galas in Limau Kasturi, Gua Musang which recorded 59.66m, exceeding the danger level of 59m, with an upward trend.
In PERLIS, the number of flood victims increased to 6,370 people with the addition of another relief centre as of 3pm, compared to 6,087 victims who were placed in 20 centres this morning.
The state disaster management committee secretariat said the flooded areas were in Padang Besar, Arau and Kangar.
In PERAK, the number of flood victims in eight districts in the state increased to 4,739 people from 1,469 families compared to 4,345 people this morning who took shelter in 44 relief centres.
Manjung District remains with the highest number of victims at 1,830 people, Perak Tengah (1,415), Bagan Datuk (509), Hilir Perak (647), Muallim (101), Larut Matang and Selama (165), Kuala Kangsar (69) and Batang Padang (three).
In KEDAH, the number of flood victims increased to 3,101 people from 1,058 families as of 3pm compared to 3,049 people this morning, with Pokok Sena becoming the new district affected by the disaster.
However, the state disaster management committee said the number of victims from the district seeking shelter at the Pokok Sena Multipurpose Hall was still being counted, while Kubang Pasu district recorded the highest number of victims (2,299) followed by Kota Setar (802).
The DID Public Infobanjir website reported that nine rivers in Kedah had exceeded the danger level, including Sungai Anak Bukit (3.37m), Sungai Padang Terap (4.55m), Sungai Bata (11.106m), Wang Tepus (10.195m) and Sungai Baru (2.018m).
In TERENGGANU, continuous rain since yesterday caused the number of flood victims to increase to 2,525 people from 800 families in 33 relief centres this evening, compared to 153 victims at 10 locations in the morning.
According to the Social Welfare Department, six districts were affected by the floods, with Marang the worst-hit district (1,603 victims), followed by Setiu (477), Besut (199), Kuala Terengganu (108), Dungun (79) and Hulu Terengganu (59).
A total of three rivers in the state are at danger level, namely Sungai Setiu and Sungai Chalok in Setiu and Sungai Besut in Besut.
In SELANGOR, the number of victims decreased to 2,359 people from 612 families compared to 2,773 people this morning, with four relief centres closed: Dewan Bakawali Section 35 and Dewan MBSA Jati Kampung Sungai Kandis in Klang, Dewan Orang Ramai Taman Gemilang, Dengkil in Sepang, and SK Sultan Abdul Aziz in Kuala Selangor.
In PAHANG, the number of flood victims remained at 19 people from eight families, all seeking shelter at Dewan Serbaguna Dato Omar Kuala Medang, Lipis. – Bernama
