Russian father urges better beach safety after son dies from jellyfish sting

ALOR SETAR: The father of a Russian boy who died after being stung by a box jellyfish at Chenang Beach, Langkawi, has called for improved safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.

Nikita Lakubanets, 32, expressed hope that authorities would take steps to address the issue.

"They should improve beach safety because deaths like this must be prevented. Our son's death shows that the problem is very serious and has caused us immense pain.

"We hope to see how this problem will be addressed in the future. We hope our son will be the last person to die from this," he told reporters here Saturday (Nov 22).

Earlier, Kedah tourism, culture and entrepreneurship committee chairman Datuk Mohd Salleh Saidin visited Nikita and his wife, Olga, 32, at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here.

Two-year-old Vladimir died at the hospital on Wednesday (Nov 19) after fighting for his life following the incident on Nov 15.
