Rescuers tracking mobile phone of missing water surge victim

KUALA LUMPUR: Rescuers are attempting to track the mobile phone of a man who was swept away by a water surge in Sungai Klang.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said they were conducting a search in the area where a signal from the phone was detected.

"The signal went on and off for a while and then stopped. We believe the phone is likely in a bag that was swept away and not on the body of the victim," he told reporters here on Tuesday (Nov 18).

He added that the search has covered 20km along the river and operations are divided into four teams using various assets, including boats, kayaks and four drones but the search had yet to find any sign of the victim.

"A surface search was conducted as the water level is still high at about two metres.

"We are facing difficulties as there has been no signs including the victim's four-wheel-drive vehicle," he said, adding that the search was suspended at 6.30pm and would resume the next morning with additional personnel and assets, including the police's K9 unit.

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department operations commander shared that search teams also checked the water's entry and exit points, adding that the dive operation on Wednesday (Nov 19) would depend wholly on water conditions. – Bernama
