SIBU: A total of 212 drug addicts in the district have been charged in court following their arrest during a month-long Ops Tapis Narkotik, which was conducted since early October, while 10 others remain in remand to assist with investigations.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the addicts, aged in their 20s to 40s, were charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"If convicted, they may face a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail term or both, along with a two-year supervision order under Section 38B of the same act," he told Bernama here on Saturday (Nov 8).

Zulkipli said that since Ops Tapis Narkotik was launched on Oct 6, a total of 246 drug-related cases have been charged under Sections 39B, 39A(1), 12(3), and 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952.

He urged the public to report drug-related activities to the police via the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department hotline at 012-2087222 (Bukit Aman) or 017-59292211 (Sarawak), or at any nearby police station. – Bernama
