Russia's Overchuk says Malaysia fits BRICS criteria

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia fits well into the BRICS criteria, said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk.

“Well, BRICS is a group of countries, which build relationships based on mutual respect and the principle of consensus,” he said on Monday (Oct 27).

“Nobody is imposing anything on anybody within BRICS. Countries exchange views on global issues and on common approaches to strategic matters that shape our modern world,” added Overchuk.

Earlier, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva voiced strong support for Malaysia’s aspiration to become a full BRICS member.

He described Malaysia as a natural partner with shared values and growing economic potential.

Brazil currently holds the BRICS presidency.
