KUALA LUMPUR: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has voiced strong support for Malaysia's aspiration to become a full member of the BRICS bloc.
He also described Malaysia as a natural partner with shared values and growing economic potential.
"I learned in my life that human behaviour always taken into account that the most important thing is effective action. The main thing you asked me is to know if I want Malaysia to be a full member of BRICS.
"Malaysia will have the support of Brazil to become a full member of BRICS," he told a press conference in conjunction with his inaugural visit to Malaysia to attend the 47th Asean Summit, here, Monday (Oct 27).
On Oct 24, 2024, Malaysia has been recognised as one of 13 nations officially added to BRICS - a bloc that collectively accounts for one-fifth of global trade - as a partner country.
BRICS refers to a group of emerging economies that originally stood for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The Brazilian leader, who turned 80 years old today during his visit, spoke warmly about his first trip to Malaysia and praised the hospitality he received.
He highlighted the warmth and openness of Malaysians as well as the country's leadership under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the government and business community.
"I must say, I am leaving Malaysia with the most positive impression possible. First of all the warmth and friendliness of the Malaysian people.
"Everywhere I go, it feels like I already know everyone. There is always someone smiling, always someone kind. It reminds me a lot of the Brazilian people.
"I am also looking forward to ending my visit with a very good impression of the gala dinner tonight. In fact, I am going to wear the shirt that was gifted to me by the (Malaysian) government so I can blend in and enjoy it just like everyone else!," he said.
Lula has called on Brazilian businesses and government leaders to act with greater boldness in pursuing trade and investment opportunities with Malaysia and other emerging markets.
He said trade between Brazil and Malaysia as well as Indonesia currently stood at about US$12 billion - a figure he described as modest when compared to the economic strength and potential of the nations involved.
"There is a lack of boldness among our entrepreneurs and ministers. Instead of staying home, they must travel the world to sell what Brazil produces, the things that Brazil has to offer," Lula added. - Bernama
