Police raids in Kedah seize 99 tonnes of e-waste worth RM5.3mil

IPOH: Approximately 99,000kg of electronic waste (e-waste) have been seized, and three men arrested during an Ops Hazard operation at Bukit Selambau, Kedah.

General Operations Force (GOF) Northern Brigade commander Senior Asst Comm Shahrum Hashim said the items were found at the back of three trailers that were on their way to a warehouse during the operation on Wednesday (Oct 22) between 1am and 6.15am.

"Together with the Kedah Environment Department and Kuala Muda district police, we've been tracking the illegal e-waste transporting activities for a week.

"During the operation, we checked the trailers and found 60 jumbo bags containing about 60,000kg of e-waste, 20 jumbo bags of scrap metal (20,000kg), 19 jumbo bags of plastic waste (19,000kg) and two metal crushing machines," he said in a statement on Thursday.

"The e-waste and trailers we've seized are worth about RM5.3mil," he added.

SAC Shahrum said the three men and all the items seized have been handed over to the Kedah Environment Department for the investigation under Section 18(1A) of the Environmental Quality Act.

"We will continue with our patrols and monitoring efforts to combat illegal e-waste processing activities.

"We are committed to taking stern actions and will not compromise when enforcing the law," he said.

"We hope the people will continue to be our eyes and ears and channel information on any illegal activities to us," he added.
