Foreign Ministry satisfied with preparations for 47th Asean Summit

‎KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry is satisfied with the preparations made ahead of the 47th Asean Summit to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here.

When met by reporters, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan also expressed hope that the conference would be held successfully, just as the 46th Asean Summit was successfully organised recently.

"Today, the meetings have commenced, from the senior officials' level up to the higher Asean officers, and many officials have also come to observe. So far, I am very satisfied with the preparations at the venue for us to host this conference," he said after inspecting the conference venue here on Thursday (Oct 23).

He was accompanied by the Asean Central Logistics Secretariat chief Raja Saifful Ridzuwan Raja Kamaruddin.

Mohamad said the ministerial-level meetings are scheduled to begin Friday and Saturday, before the summit takes place from Sunday to next Monday, involving Asean Heads of State and leaders of Dialogue Partner countries.

Regarding the security aspect, he said the control implemented by the responsible authorities is optimal.

He also sought cooperation from the public, especially in relation to the phased road closures around the capital city.

"Thank God, security is at a good level. I ask for the cooperation of all parties so that the movement of the country's guests runs smoothly as there will be road closures, especially on Oct 25 and 26, due to the arrival of Asean and Dialogue Partner country leaders," he said.

In addition to the Asean leaders, more than 20 prominent world leaders are scheduled to attend the summit, including United States President Donald Trump, Premier of China Li Qiang, President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the European Council António Costa, and Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi.

This is the fifth time Malaysia has held the Asean Chairmanship since the bloc's establishment in 1967, following 2015, 2005, 1997, and 1977.

The Philippines will assume the Asean chairmanship from Malaysia in 2026. - Bernama
