IPOH: Malaysia should step up efforts to have a law requiring adult children to provide financial support to their aged parents, says Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran (pic).
He said the implementation of such a law would serve as an institutional reform, given the frequent complaints from elderly people about their children’s neglect.
“Some earn well but provide no financial support and do not visit their parents,” he said after attending the Deepavali Humanitarian and Environment project organised by LC Perak Silver State and Ipoh City Watch at Kinta Heights yesterday. Also present was Ipoh City Watch president Prof Dr Richard Ng.
Kulasegaran said that Singapore has laws to address this issue (Maintenance of Parents Act), though he acknowledged that it could be a sensitive topic.
However, he urged the government to formulate this law as soon as possible, as it will benefit both the parents and the government.
