Selangor moves to rebuild trust in school safety


KLANG: The Selangor government will hold meetings with SMK Bandar Utama 4 parents, teachers and students, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the decision to do so was made at the state executive council meeting yesterday and was aimed at addressing various issues following the death of a 16-year-old student who was stabbed by a schoolmate.

“The meeting is to remember the student who lost her life, restore parents, teachers and children’s confidence towards the level of safety at the school and for trauma recovery,” Amirudin said in a statement.

He added that the meeting touches on swift measures such as registering students at the school, usage of metal detectors and CCTVs, as well as having a smart notification system covering parents and school teachers.

According to Amirudin, the process will involve discussions with parents as well as encompass the district Education Department, the Selangor Education Depart­ment, the Education Ministry, the police as well as the school’s Parent-Teacher Association.

“This is because incidents like this should never be allowed to happen again and schools must once again become the safest places for our children,” he added.

Amirudin noted that the tragedy has traumatised other students, especially those who had witnessed the incident.

“It has resulted in attendance at the school decreasing in the last two to three days,” he said.
