IPOH: With Deepavali around the corner, the aroma of freshly fried snacks is prevalent in Kampung Kacang Putih.

The village in Buntong is abuzz with people looking for a variety of snacks, such as crispy murukku, spicy pakoda, dhal-based and tapioca chips, as well as omapodi.

Traders are racing against time to meet the customary festive demand for the traditional Indian treats.

For decades, this tiny village has been the main spot for Malaysians seeking authentic kacang putih and other favourites.

This Deepavali is no different, with shoppers leaving with bags of assorted mixes, sweets and biscuits.

Traders said demand has surged and they have to work late to pack orders.

“Many know that snacks here are cheaper,” said S. Sathis Kumar, 35.

“For example, a container of achi murukku sells for about RM25 in my shop, while elsewhere it can go up to RM40.”

Another trader, S. Vellan, 33, said business has surged, with many outstation visitors dropping by over the past week.

“We expect more visitors from other states to come for a shopping spree before Deepavali,” he said.

Among the customers were P. Balamurugan, 30, and his colleagues Shamala Felisia Poopathy, 40, and N. Maruthamuthu, 48.

The trio, who work in a construction firm in Kuala Lumpur, were on a working visit.

“We are buying over 200 packets of various snacks for our colleagues. It is our first visit here, and prices are much lower and the snacks are fresh,” said Balamurugan.

Rosany Kannan, in her late 60s, said she bought snacks and cookies for a friend who teaches Orang Asli students.

Another shopper, Calee Chen, 56, said buying snacks during Deepavali was an annual affair.

“The snacks here are so fresh and delicious, and I never miss the chance to visit every year,” she said.
