PETALING JAYA: Police will step up patrols and digital safety awareness campaigns as the government considers policies to protect underage users from misusing social media and digital devices.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the misuse of social media and devices had become a contributing factor to bullying and the “decline of discipline”.
He added that the ministry applauded the mulling of plans to restrict access to social media platforms that display violent, pornographic and other harmful content that could endanger minors.
“As a complement to this initiative, the police will implement an integrated approach emphasising education, prevention, and enforcement.
“Key focus areas include strengthening digital safety awareness campaigns in collaboration with the Education Ministry and parent-teacher associations, increasing police patrols and presence in school areas and reinforcing the role of School Liaison Officer in guiding students on discipline and cyber safety,” he said in a statement on Friday (Oct 17).
He added that the ministry would also support a holistic approach, including enhancing mental health support systems in schools and the community, and keeping social media platforms accountable by ensuring they play a role in protecting underage users.
“This initiative is not intended to restrict freedom, but to protect the future of Malaysia’s young generation, ensuring they grow up in a learning environment that is safe, disciplined, and mentally as well as digitally healthy, which is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani,” he said.
