Colombian, Mexican suspects nabbed over house break-ins

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have busted a house break-in gang made up of Colombian and Mexican nationals.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said investigations into the group began on Sept 21 following a report of a house break-in in the Tambun area of Perak.

He said investigations revealed that the group was operating across state lines, with similar cases detected in other states.

“Based on the findings, we launched an operation on Oct 11, which led to the arrest of four suspects at a condominium along Jalan Klang Lama. The operation was jointly carried out by Perak and Brickfields police, with assistance from Bukit Aman CID,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman on Friday (Oct 17).

“Three of those arrested are from Colombia, while one is from Mexico. The group is believed to have carried out break-ins in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Perak, and has been active since early 2025,” he said.

Comm Kumar said two of the Colombian suspects had previously been arrested in 2012 for similar offences and had re-entered the country illegally.

“They would usually target unoccupied homes in the afternoon, when residents were still at work or out for dinner,” he said.

Police believe the arrests have solved at least four cases, involving total losses estimated at around RM1mil. Two of the cases were solved within 24 hours of the arrests.

All four suspects have been remanded until Oct 19 to assist in investigations.
