PAS deputy president urges sterner MCMC action on harmful online content


KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) must take sterner action on harmful online content, says PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man

Speaking in Parliament, the Kubang Kerian MP said the government must play a stronger role in protecting youths online and added that schools and families cannot shoulder the burden alone.

“What happens in schools reflects what takes place outside,” he said on Thursday (Oct 16).

“At home, parents are responsible and in schools, teachers are responsible. Between home and school, it is the government’s duty to protect,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.

Tuan Ibrahim said banning social media for under-13s does not solve the issue.

“Does that mean it is acceptable for those aged 15 or 18 to have social media” he said, adding that the decay of values is the same regardless of age.

“Even adults are not immune and children are reflections of their parents,” he said.

He urged the MCMC to be firm in blocking access to pornographic, violent and obscene content including inappropriate games.

“What is the MCMC doing to completely block pornographic and violent materials from corrupting our youth,” he said.

Tuan Ibrahim said preventive measures must start early or consequences will be lasting.

“When we fail at the early stage, it manifests in schools,” he said.

“The data shows the young are being corrupted and adults are deteriorating,” he added.
