Indonesian couple pleads guilty to abusing child, leading to his death


IPOH: A couple pleaded guilty in a Sessions Court here to abusing a three-year-old boy under their care, leading to his death last month.

Labourer Siswadi, 35, and his unemployed wife Nurhayati, 34, both from Medan, Indonesia, pleaded guilty to the charge read to them before judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad on Tuesday (Oct 14).

The court fixed Nov 17 for presentation of the case facts with an interpreter present, and for sentencing.

The court also ordered the prosecution to notify the Indonesian Embassy about the case.

According to the charge sheet, the couple, who had custody of the boy, identified as Mhd Hasbih, abused him resulting in his death at a house in Kampung Sadang Blanja Kiri, Parit in Perak Tengah, at around 10am on Sept 22.

The offence under Section 31(1)(a)of the Child Act 2001, punishable under the same section, was read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they face a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both.

Deputy public prosecutor S. Vitthiyeswary did not offer bail, as the accused are currently detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
