KUALA LUMPUR: Five people, including two officers from a federal enforcement agency, have been remanded over allegations of soliciting and receiving about RM1mil in bribes linked to foreign worker enforcement.
It is learnt that the suspects, comprising two enforcement officers and three foreign worker agents, allegedly received the money from a foreign worker agency in exchange for not taking enforcement action against foreign workers under the agency’s supervision.
The five suspects were remanded for five days until Nov 1 following a remand order issued by Magistrate A. Dhilip Nair at the Johor Baru Sessions Court on Wednesday (Oct 28).
The suspects, comprising three men and two women aged between their 40s and 60s, were detained in an operation conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Selangor and Johor between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday (Oct 27).
Initial investigations found that the suspects allegedly conspired to commit the offences between 2018 and 2025.
During that period, 44 online money transfers involving about RM1mil were believed to have been made.
Johor MACC director Datuk Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrests when contacted.
He said the case was being investigated under Sections 16(a)(B) and 16(b)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
The investigation stemmed from an operation conducted by the MACC’s Intelligence Division.
