Stronger social protection for gig workers

PETALING JAYA: The move to enhance retirement savings and skills training is an important step towards building stronger social protection for gig workers.

Malaysia E-Hailing & Delivery Organisation president Masrizal Mahidin said the newly announced i-Saraan Plus scheme, which offers RM600 in annual matching contributions to Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors – capped at RM6,000 over a lifetime – will go a long way in encouraging savings among self-employed Malaysians.

“This is crucial in encouraging savings and strengthening social protection for gig workers, especially those in the e-hailing and p-hailing sectors,” he said.

He added that many drivers and riders currently rely on ad-hoc or voluntary contributions to the EPF, making the new matching incentive a timely boost that could motivate more gig workers to participate.
